First Friday in Raleigh

So many things to do in downtown Raleigh, so little time…

…especially on First Fridays, and this month is no different.

The ruff_Raleigh Bicycle Squadron will lead another epic bike parade, stopping at various galleries along the way.  Everyone is welcome but there are a few things you should know:
1) Meet @ NCSU Belltower on Hillsborough St at 7pm sharp
2) Bring: bicycle.lock. friends. bootie shorts. helmet. soopa-soakas. sand. and sunscreen.
3) Make a donation if you imbibe at the galleries.
4) Be ready to rock…and roll out with probably 100 folks, most on bikes, some on roller blades or boards; dress up, bring some tunes, whatever you do be safe.

Various Art Galleries
Artists exhibited this weekend include Julie Niskanen’s “Undercurrents” and Vidabeth Bensen’s “New Directions.” “Undercurrents” deals with natural forms that often become background in our hectic lives. Niskanen uses these organic forms as a method of reflecting on, and bringing forth, the rhythms of nature. Through the use of mezzotint and various etching techniques, the artist achieves a wide range of tones and textures to complement her selected imagery and ideas. In “New Directions,” Bensen exhibits a series of hand-pulled prints that draw from her time living abroad, especially in Asia and the Middle East. Each print uses stencils created from hand-cut film, paper or painted directly onto a silkscreen using drawing fluid and screen filler. Some of the pieces in this exhibition are printed on handmade Japanese paper and then collaged onto stretched canvas.
Also on our itinerary is Flanders Gallery, where we’ll see Geometric Constructs: with work by Ashlynn Browning, Chris Nau, Gianna Commito, and Stephanie McMahon. This show will feature a mix of geometric abstractions on paper and panel by four artists from around the country. The free exhibition runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Flanders. Visit Over at Lump Gallery, we’ll see what black damp, an installation by Lydia Moyer, is all about. Visit
